This coffee comes from the Kiamugumo Factory, a member of the New Ngariama Farmers Cooperative Society. The New Ngariama Farmers Cooperative Society currently has 1,500 members. Kiamugumo factory is located in the Ngariama area, specifically in the Nyangeni sub-location of Kirinyaga County, on the slopes of Mount Kenya.
Rich volcanic soil, nearly 1,700mm of annual rainfall, and the abundance of SL 28 and SL 34 varieties contribute significantly to the high-quality coffee produced in this area. The climate typically ranges from 12 to 25 degrees Celsius year-round. The production cycle follows a standard timeframe, with the main crop harvested from October through December/January and the fly crop harvested from April through June.
After picking, ripe cherries are brought to the factory by smallholder farmers for wet processing, which removes the skin and pulp. The nearest water source is the Kii River. The wastewater is treated before being released back into nature, a common practice at most mills. After washing, the coffee is dried on traditional African raised beds, allowing good air circulation around the beans. Once dried to a moisture content of 11-13%, the beans are taken to the Central Kenya Coffee Mill in Karatina, Nyeri County, for grading and sorting.
We're tasting, tart cranberry acidity, dense plum sweetness, and heavy sweet tea throughout the cup.
